Folding Chair Sticker
Inspired by the Montgomery Riverfront Brawl on August 5, 2023, when a group of white men violently assaulted a Black riverboat captain. The Black community stepped in and took swift action, swarming the doc from local restaurants, diving off boats from across the river, and dealing some much overdue justice. The incident involved a metal folding chair (which was invented by a Black man, Nathaniel Alexander, in 1911) being used to knock some sense into a white fool.
The cultural significance of the event was layered; not just with the folding chair, but also with Montgomery’s racially charged history, the experience of community taking justice into their own hands and being backed by the law, a system that rarely has our backs! I could go on, but it’s worth looking it up for yourself!
